Recently in the news was the fact that one Uwe Boll plans to make a yet another movie out of a PC game (his current 'credits' include House of the Dead), but this time he has gone for a rather more unexpeted choice - Dungeon Siege - Boll says:
QUOTE
"'Dungeon Siege' transcends the video game genre and appeals to mainstream entertainment audiences," said Boll. "Based on the success of 'House of the Dead,' I believe 'Dungeon Siege' contains major crossover potential because of its unique blend of action and fantasy, on the order of 'Lord of the Rings.'"

He is also rumored to be the director of the recently announced movie of Bloodrayne, as well as being at the helm of Alone in the Dark - is this man on a mission to destroy games credibility through giving them shoddy Hollywood treatment and expecting loyal gamers to go an see the finished efforts?

On a more optimistic note - there's recently been a trailer and a small featurette of Alien vs Predator... which might be good... I hope so...

Is there any hope for movies that started life out as a video game? Or will we always disappointed on the way the main character transfers across to the big screen?

Given the fact that most of the game characters you get do not as such have developed character in themselves, often because that's part of what You're supposed to bring to the game as the controlling influence, it's probably kind of difficult to flesh out these flat characters into a format which players view as right for the part.

I would guess it's harder than even turning a book into a film.

I was trying to think of a single game to film transition which produced something really worth watching....and I'm coming up short. <_<

you know i really enjoy playing the House of the Dead games down the arcades or on my little Dreamcast, but this movie of it is just looks completely shight! the first time i heard this movie was going to be made, i thought it would be similar to the game itself as it has a wonderful story, but this is different and not what i was expecting!

I think it has gernerally been more successful for games to be derived from films than films from games. I can think of one reasonable attempt though: Tomb Raider was worth watching, or at least Angelina Jolie was/is ! ;)

Designers and the Movies they love - an interesting link, although not entirely on topic...

QUOTE (Gabe Newell)

To be honest, I don't think I've learned much about game design from movie directors. There are too many Miyamoto games to learn from first. Nowadays, I can't really watch a movie, good or bad or regardless of genre, without thinking about how it relates to the overall entertainment experience of games. "Ooh, that's a good voice" or "boo, they left that issue completely unresolved" or "they should have started over with a different script."

In some ways, bad movies are more helpful at drawing attention to craft issues than good movies.

It makes an interesting enough a read, especially on a Sunday.

Uwe Boll has been at it again - apparently buying the movie rights for Far Cry, as reported by Game Gossip, they also mention that he has also bought the rights to other games such as Fear Effect, BloodRayne and Driv3r...

I predict (using my wild-stab-in-the-dark-o-tron) that all the movies shall be poor, but Bloodrayne will interest men for the fact that it's based on a teenage vampire who wears figure hugging outfits...

Theif:The Circle also mention rumors of a possible Thief movie, which has nothing at all to do with Mr.Boll and his quest to make as many movies of games as he can...

It looks... bad... but that's no surprise to anyone really, is it?

Penny Arcade have a theory

I would like to thank *huge sarcasm* Mr Uwe Boll for destroying a very good & well respected arcade videogame franchise in The House of the Dead. And to think, there are rumours & it may quite possibily be true that Sega are planning on making the next game based upon the movie. Well I sure as hell will not waste my 50p or £1 coins on that!

Bloodrayne??? No thanks. Never played the game and wouldn't really care about the film to be honest. This man should not make any films based on videogames anymore!
