Stinky feet research wins IgNobel prize
Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Research into stinky feet, a study on the sound of fingernails on a blackboard and a device that repels teen-agers with an annoying high-pitched hum on Thursday won IgNobel prizes -- the humorous counterpart to this week's Nobel prizes.

Other winning research included a U.S. and Israeli team's discovery that hiccups could be cured with a finger up the rectum and a study into why woodpeckers do not get headaches.

"The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative -- and spur people's interest in science, medicine and technology," said Marc Abrahams, editor of the science humor magazine.

The prize given in the field of mathematics for "calculating the number of shots a photographer must take to almost ensure that nobody in a group photo will have their eyes closed" seemed most relevant to me. Don't think I will be trying the cure for hiccups out anytime soon - not quite that desperate (or kinky).

Ha! I just read the same thing on the Beeb!

I always found drinking vinegar a good way to stop hiccups - the method suggested here is just so very wrong (and not one to try in public).

But you probably wouldn't want to drink vinegar in public. Wouldn't drinking vinegar be really really horrible anyway?

Much better than sticking yer finger up your bum. I guess the common denominator in all this, scientifically speaking, is body shock. Either from the horrid taste of vinegar or... you know what. The alarm factor maybe...

Non of the other cures for hiccups I've tried have ever ever worked - all being fallacious in origin. It's somewhat annoying following the advice of maternal parents who don't know what the hell they're talking about. I grew up in a highly superstitious environment where mirrors and umbrellas were to be avoided etc. Hasn't done me much good really.

Eugh, I think this'll just have to be one of those things I'll take your word for but never actually try.
