How do you like your games to end?
After the big (and grossly unfair) big boss is over and done with, and the credits are rolling - do you like the game to offer you more? Or do you want it all to end, without thousands of fiddly unlockables that can only be obtained by jumping through hoops that the game sets? I like them to end, and for that to be it - none of this dragging out gameplay hours by offering you new weapons/costumes if you play through it all again on a harder setting. |

Some games I don't want to end, Halo, Halo2, Call of Duty - I would love for them to still be new and exciting everytime i have an urge to play them.
But in general, I like the game to end with a conclusion to a storyline - so it feels satisfying after you spent 4 hours playing through the last few levels, just to see what happens. |

I got really bored of Halo but I think CoD and CoD2 would be very good if they never ended. Which is probably what makes them very good online games.

Personally it is just down to the type of game.
If it is an FPS game, then I would want the Single Player experience to just end once completed because quite frankly, I find them to be extremely boring now. Can't really see the point of a story tacked on to something where all you can do is just run around and shoot things and nothing more. One reason why I feel like this is because of the disappointing sequals i.e. Half Life 2. I can never go back into this game anymore and am not even bothered with the current episodic expansions. And with something like the classic Quake 2, I definately wanted more because the last boss was interesting and particularly the ending FMV sequance which left it open for a sequal. But once Quake 4 came along, my hig hexpectations wasn't met and in the end, disappointment. It is why I tend to prefer the Multiplayer side of things for FPS since it is just hop on, have some fun and the only way to end it is if you yourself need to take a break and stop. Now if it is a game like a SHUMP, Fighting or any other Arcadey type, then I would want more after it all ends. Because it is the reason they are so short that you want more, and it makes you want to go back to playing them. The new stages, costumes, weapons etc is a cheap tactic for replayability, but it always works. Why? Because I actually want to go back into them, and completely master the game. They may be extremely short, but they actually have alot of depth to the gameplay and thats where it matters. -------------------- |

I'm sure there's books with that as a theme... I must say that I never go back to a game for new costumes, etc - I have better things to do with my time, heck - if I'm that concerned about seeing them I'm sure there's a cheat. |
