Secret alarm becomes dance track
A high-pitched alarm designed to repel youngsters from shops is being used for the melody of a dance track after the success of a mobile phone ringtone. Merthyr Tydfil-based Compound Security released the "Mosquito" ringtone as a way of letting teenagers hear their phones ringing without adults knowing. Mr Morris is the commercial director of the firm which developed the Mosquito box. It emits a high-pitched noise that can only be heard by young people and is claimed to drive gangs away from troublespots. The alarms were originally designed by the business to repel gangs of young people loitering around shopping centres without upsetting adult customers. Opera Telecom who will sell the track as PC and mobile downloads said it was expecting big sales. Gary Corbett who runs the company said: "After the launch of the 'Mozzy Tone' ringtone many adults were surprised that they actually couldn't hear it. "The secret sections within this new song will work in the same way and we're sure kids will love it just as much." A condition called presbycusis, or ageing ear, means that by the time most people reach the age of 25, they cannot hear much above a frequency of 13 or 14 kilohertz. Can you hear it, grandpa? BBC linkage To be honest I don't know if I can hear it or not. I'm very deaf in real life and it'd be odd if I could hear this one going off, especially as I'm well over the grand old age of 25! --------------------

I could hear a slight high pitch noise but couldn't be sure with the terrible attempt at rapping over it!
considering I am 29, it appears I have the hearing of a teenager then! pity about the rest of me! I have got to making that noise when you bend down to pick something up. --------------------

Just to follow up:
The Jerusalem Post has a much better article on the subject (for those who aren't bored of it all already). They link to some useful sites: Full sound (Quicktime) Modified 17k version (I think) Listening to these rather than anything else tells me I really can't hear a damn thing. Not surprising really. Damn, I feel so left out and so uncool! Anyone wanting to create their own ringtones might like to check this out: Coolringer.com but then, I know it supports ads so might be bloated with the stuff. Use at your own risk etc. --------------------
