Well, you could get the Custom PC mag's best buy which is the MSI NX7800GT-T2D256E for £258.49.
As regards CPU, maybe a AMD64 3500, which would give you £15 change:Ebuyer --------------------

Or rather, A1 had a very good comparison of ATI's last generation graphics cards. The new ATI range are soon to hit the stores with Overclockers offering preorders. Bit pricey mind.
I'm sure you knew all this anyway. Now might be a better time to get the older ATI cards or plumb for a spankingly good Geforece like Wags suggests. Looks good. Shader model 3... --------------------

Brand new and nice and cheap! Very tempting it is!
But since your looking to spend around the £250 price range, I'd probably wait up a bit for see what is on offer for the new GeForce 7 series of cards. The one wags listed, though just a bit over budget sounds very good! Or you could still go for the slight last generation of cards, but opt for versions that have 512mb of memory! Games these days tend to use up alot, and would be a nice to be set for the future as well. The use of 256mb cards are getting apparent nowadays. -------------------- |

Yeah, the card was nice - unless you're redcarmad then it's been sold. But I guess you can always get them on ebay cheap now the new series are out. The advantage of going ATI of course is their Crossfire system. Of course, Nvidia already have SLI but I like the sound of twinning an X800 series with the X1800 in the future when more graphics beef is really needed.

That looks like a trade sale to me. The guy's questions answered bit looks a bit too pro to me as does his general sales patter.
As Pilchy says, OEM will give you less clout with the manufacturers if its not retail and complete with boxes and documentation. Manufacturers are funny that way so I'd stear clear also. Pilch's other observations are worth noting also. Overclockers did have some x800s in stock. There was a nice IceQ one or whatever it's called, x800 XT/PE, which that A1 link I gave you, points out it performs bang for buck, almost as well as the 850s though it uses a different core. I didn't realise you could get AGP/PCI-Express convertors. Anyone seen where they're sold? It'd be a great way to prolong the life of me computer and get the ailing graphics card updated. Plus, the x800 series (PCI-E) ought to be Crossfire compatible so can be twinned later on with a master ATI card. My bad - OCs only have the XL and GT versions in PCI-E. (Mixed them up with the AGP versions which they do have) This post has been edited by Spook Tooth: Oct 6 2005, 20:52 --------------------

Right, I guess you might get such a convertor supplied with the GFX card as standard no?

One things for certain, if a "X850 XT PE" is the one your after, then you could save yourself alot of money by getting the "X850 XT", just as long as it is a very decent model with decent memory (Samsung!!!) and it can easily overlock way past the "XT PE" speeds!
And a AGP to PCI-E convertor to come with a GFX?? Not likely!! -------------------- |
