Excellent news for all fans of Half Life, and I'm one,

Half Life 2 due out latter in the year, considered by many to be THE best game ever.

For all the wonderful reviews, endless recommendations and numerous mods, I have a terrible thing to admit too...

I don't like the Half Life series.

Yes, it's true, I could never fully get to grips with the game - the way the camera moved, and the general loose feelings that I got from the controls put me off. I played enough to appreciate that the game was a nice piece of work, but other than that I'd much rather have been playing on Unreal Tournament.

Still, it will be interesting to see some screenshots - there's an awful lot of pretty looking games coming out.

I used to love the way the game looked.

however, unfortunately it used to hit me bad with motion sickness. I tried 2 or 3 times to play the game over a period of months (that's play it, curse, uninstall it, change my mind reinstall it.....ad nauseum).

I'd be interested to see if they can maintain the curve though. Just don't expect to be able to play it without humungous headaches.

This is looking really good, no screen shoots yet though...

Full Story:

Half-Life 2 (full name) has been in development since late 1998, ever since Valve has released the original Half-Life. The reason for secrecy? They knew how much the game would mean to their fans, and that's why they wanted to make it perfect before anyone would know about it. The good part is that the game will be in stores... on September 30, 2003. It will be available through both retailers and Valve's recently launched pay-per-download client, Steam.

Half-Life 2 takes place in a Eastern European city, called City 17. It happens a short time after the end of the first game. Earth is once again under attack by aliens from Xen, and you, Gordon Freeman (now working for a secret government agency) have to save the day. Valve promises 12 chapters and almost 40 hours of gameplay.

The game is powered by Valve's in-house developed graphics engine, called Source. The specs of the graphics engine sound very impressive, and Half-Life 2 is sure to give Doom 3 a run for its money. Even more impressive is the scalability of this engine - while to take full advantage of it an Athlon 2Ghz with a GeForce 4 will be needed, the game will be able to run on a P3-700 powered by a DX6 compatible video card.

Doesn't like HL indeed, may just as well said, I don't like beer, :o

Hi Ordep, :D I'm hoping that it can rival the original or is that expecting too much? Also I'm just hoping I won't have to upgrade my system to play this!

Hope so Mundy, they've had 5 years putting this sequel together, so it alt to be, <_<

No specs available yet that I can find, I'm slightly concerned myself, as I'm still running the Raneon 8500 le.

I've currently got DFBHD & Emperors tomb on the go, and it seems to be coping well enough with those two though.

Yeah, I have the Radeon 8500 LE too. Must say I've been impressed with it's service so far. I like to be able to turn all the settings/effects on full and not experience any slowdown which of course you can with the older games.

I have the AMD 1900+ which copes well for most of my needs but hey what the hell HL2 may be the kick in the butt I need to upgrade a few bits. (Can you tell I've been out on the vino? it's called post holiday depression!).

They would say wouldn't they?

Poor Mundy - back to the reality of Manchester. I guess it wouldn't hurt now to say whilst you were away we had a heat wave for several weeks - when did you get back exactly? I reckon you may have brought some clouds back with ya that's all. :D

I have the Athlon 1900+ in one machine also but with a direct x 8 graphics card (GF4Ti4400). I think if anything, you should go for a decent GF4 Ti4200 card - there x8AGP now so it'll last a while longer for when you change your compatible motherboards at a later date. The advantage of a direct x 8 card, is not just performance in rate of frames of course, but the features for enhancing quality settings - I don't know too much about it all, but games look far better with a decent graphics card, and the GF4Ti4200 (£120+) is a very good performer and excellent value also. That said, if you like ATi and their Radeon cards, there are plenty of Direct X 9 cards to choose from, a few recent additions like 9600 (£150mark) and 9800 if you're feeling stupidly rich and want to spend £400.

Decisions decisions...

Spook, I got back last Wednesday. had three weeks of glorious sunshine, on some days it was just to hot... but hey who's complaining. Had a week in Orlando meeting Mickey and friends, went on all the crazy upside down rides... crazy. Then went down to Ft Lauderdale, The Keys, The Everglades, Naples, Sarasota and finished off at Clearwater. It truly was a magical experience. Heat wave eh! that sounds about right, normally the rain follows me and it's sunny wherever I'm not! Anyhow I'm well off topic here.

PC Zone, I'm gonna buy a copy... I want to read all about HL2, I want to drool over the screenshots and send my heart racing at the prospect of playing this game.

Looks very good, Ordep. Those screenshots do make the mouth water...

Mundy, I'll say it again but your holiday sounded terrific. I am giving seriosu thought to getting away this year myself. I may look into Inter-railing again - but just France, Spain and Morroco zone. (That is if I'm not too old for the ticket alread - think last shout is age 30).

I haven't even played the original game so haven't any idea how this new one will play compared to the original. Gonna give it a go though - can't be all that bad now cannit, not if the hordes of HL devotees is anything to go by.
