Following on from the beta demo

This is taken from Gamespot.com:
QUOTE
Activision tells us that the free stand-alone multiplayer game based on Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be released in the next 24 hours.

We've just heard from Activision that Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is expected to be released very soon, likely tonight or tomorrow.

Enemy Territory is unusual in a few ways: It includes a bunch of new multiplayer content and many substantial gameplay enhancements, it doesn't require the retail version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and it's free. Developed by UK-based Splash Damage in cooperation with id Software, Enemy Territory was original conceived as the multiplayer side of a retail expansion pack that's since been canceled.

Late last month, Activision and id released a test version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory that provides a taste of the new gameplay style and a look at one of the new maps.

Stay tuned for more coverage of the game.

So, wait.. I always thought that this was an expansion to the original RTCW, even after they cancelled its commercial release - but now it's free and doesn't require the original?

Interesting...

The original expansion pack was cancelled due to Id/Activision not being happy with the way that the single player side of the game was progressing and in a lesson to other companies *cough* EA *cough* they decided not to slaughter the cash cow on this occasion - but to release the Multiplayer expansion for free!

Kind people...

It's also available from 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Gamers Hell, and AusGamers

yes they are VERY VERY kind people!! i just hope that the developers got paid a reasonable amount of money for the work that they had to do just for this! this could be said for anything else that came for free as well!

257.78 MB!! hmm, if i get a good constant speed of 4-5 kb/sec then i should probably get it within the matter of........................less than a day lol! if it was a weekend it would be much easier since my free net is the usual off-peak one! it would be much easier if i had BB!!! june 18th is when my local excahgne would be activated, hurray!! then its some heavy research into the right BB ISPs!

Because you need the gallant, brave hearted, fearless Commader Pig to protect you!

Or that could read:

.... unsuspecting, tactically inept, foolish Commander Pig to draw fire away from you!

It takes time to learn the map and where the objectives are, but once you've learned these things you can move forward in an educated manner... before being gunned down mercilessly...

Ho hum.

I had problems getting my copy of RTCW (Game of the year edition) to work in a multiplayer enviroment, it seemed to be something to do with being over-patched, for there were scant servers available for me to join, and the ones that were available were devoid of life...

And then I went and did the same thing with Battlefield... some people just never learn do they? :(

Anyway - Enemy Territory is a nice little freebie, let me know if you want to meet up online at some point, it has been far too long since we last did such things...

Having trouble with this, installed o.k. but keep getting kicked off servers... no cd key! Found a solution to this but now getting other error reports. Hmm, seems that this is a problem with punkbuster. :(

Anyhow, I've given up in frustration and gone back to Spearhead.

How bizarre, why would you need a CD key for a game that doesn't have a CD?

Sorry to hear about that Mundy.. after all my recommendations too...

Suggest you un-install the single player Mundy and reinstall ET.

Something corrupted there me thinks.

Bloody computers, who needs 'em

Strange isn't it? Seems there are others with the same problem, Punkbuster have posted a workaround on their web site which you need to enter into the console. Great I thought but now getting these different error messages. I did install to a different directory from the single player (as recommended) so don't think thats the cause.

I'll have another try at the weekend... time allowing.
