But before you become too impressed, know that Sonys initial shipment was a mere 200,000 units - considerably less than the half a million Nintendo DS's that were available on its launch day earlier this month (and that managed to sell 230,000 on its first day)

QUOTE
Queues were especially large at retailers such as Bic Camera which did not take pre-orders for the hardware, with a spokesperson for the retailer telling Bloomberg that "it's the most people we've seen lined up for a game device in recent times."

According to market research firm Media Create, 171,963 units of the PlayStation Portable were sold yesterday in Japan; taking exports and untracked sales into account, it seems likely that practically all of the initial allocation has been sold out.

Sony hopes to ship additional units to Japanese retailers on an ongoing basis between now and the New Year, bringing final numbers to around 500,000 units by the end of the year.

Exporters have been quick to cash in on the difficulty faced by most customers in getting hold of PlayStation Portable hardware, with many charging more than three times the retail value of the console to ship units outside Japan.

To be the first to reply to myself - there's LOTS of reading material available on the old t'internet on the PSP at this moment in time (as to be expected), here's a few items.

Spong report that the battery life for the PSP:
QUOTE
Reports we have been receiving have placed the power performance at around the three hour mark. All units have been using Namco’s delicious Ridge Racers with speaker sound, and gamers have reported an average of 2 hours and 40 minutes game time. Using headphones, the duration crept up to a shade over three hours and ten minutes.

No word on the battery life when using video playback though.

Spong also report on the first wave of user complaints:
QUOTE
As with the launch of any new console (particularly from Sony, a company which has seen its credibility as a manufacturer take some serious knocks in recent times) early adopters have been quick to lodge build-quality complaints with the media.

Of these, the PSP has been on the receiving end of a considerable number of dead pixel moans, akin to those accompanying the Nintendo DS. The worst complaints are of three pixel outs on a single unit, though most report solo duds.

Other complaints stem from basic build-quality issues that inevitably impact on small lead-time new technology releases. Of these, stuck buttons, fragile analogue controllers and faulty UMD mechanisms have flared up most often, though in the main - and compared to the launches of the PlayStation and Xbox - the PSP seems to have been put together rather well. If SCEI reacts to the dead pixel issue, we’ll let you know.

On the gaming front - computerandvideogames.com lead the way:

Project Interceptor - a possible UK launch title come March
World Rally Championship
Wipeout Pure - Boomtown article
Ridge Racer - "This is the essence of the whole Ridge Racer series, distilled into one game for portable play."
Medieval
Formula One
This Is Football (working title)
Fired Up
Everybody's Golf
Ape Academy

And finally they also mention that we'll be able to download additional data to our PSPs

Phew... That's all for now...

IGN have started a 'battery journal' which should help answer the question of how long the PSP battery lasts.

Whilst Gamers Hell have some European games release news - similar to that of CVG.

And us Brits will have to wait till next March for it to arrive here. Would be interesting to see how well sales goes since Sony sould have much more units by then and wit hthe stiff competition from the Nintendo DS.
