I can understand this, but to me it is stupid... I played grand theft auto and other games when i was 12/13. Never really affected me. It isnt the games that cause the actual problems.. it is down to the way a kid is brought up that is the main problem, and doing this wont really do anything... And also how are they going to restrict games brought online? |

You'd think that the 15/18 rating on the game would give the parents a clue to the fact that the contents of said game aren't suitable for for young Jeremy*
Still, as you say PilchY - it's not really down to the games, more to the childs upbringing... *child may not be called Jeremy |

I've seen you play CSS and I beg to differ on this point. :P First off the conclusion at the end of the article says there's no proof that media violence causes a reflective violence in viewers. Which could mean the guy is vying for a grant to get such proof, or could be him telling yon parents not to get their knickers in a twist. We've been discussing similar stories on our CoD clan site, but it basically boils down to the age old cry of "Hey, it's not my fault!" In this case it's the cry of parents who find that little Timmy recently spent several weeks not playing the flute as his parents had thought but instead practicing vivisection on the neighbourhood cats. It's not my fault that my child has no grasp of social morals, no social control and is in fact a little psycopath. And of course they're both right and wrong. It is in part their fault. Not so much in the words of that fine poem "They Fur you up your mum and dad, they may not mean to but they do" (Bet our site censor picks that up :P ) Mostly it's they're fault because whilst they may love little Timmy, there are times when they don't know how to cope and so they stick him away, with a flute or a computer and leave him to explore the world alone. It's not only their fault though. Because society has this huge flaw wherein it pours images of deviant attitudes into us through films, books, music and, Yes, games - and says By god Yes it is fun to be a killer, as long as it's pretend. So how can little Timmy differentiate between what's a high scoring game style and what's actually a criminal act? Especially where, in the case of games, there is a growing trend for games to be more and more realistic? Well I guess the answer to that is to push the idea of social morality more. To maybe ease up on the idea that the object of life is to earn the most money and that actually screwing everyone else is ok. Heck, if I'm a bit of a wideboy, if I steal things, fight, hurt people, it's ok cause I'm cool. No, it's really not. Little Tim has to be taught to value something other than himself. And the people to do it are society, and yes the parents. Gonna stop there cause I think I'm getting carried away. |

A lot of it could and i think is much more the people people befriend if you are friends with criminals the chances are one days they are going to take you along with them one day and that is what will get people into crime. You also have to consider peoples status are they poor, then maybe they are more likly to take up stealing.

Sorry PB on this I completely disagree. People will steal if they can justify it to themselves. It's a mistake to think that people with less money have less social responsibility or status or integrity. |

I know that coz one of my best friends is poor but i have seen poor people turn to crime and they (well most) have been caught by the police. And they have been taking other people things and selling them on ebay.

This doesn't suggest that they're poor so much as thick (or maybe just not truly criminally minded)
Criminals who do their deeds well don't get caught and theoretically make money and therefore don't tend to be poor. I think the problem in this offshoot chat is that we're sort of talking about different kinds of crime. I think you're talking petty theft - which is no less theft - and when I think of it my mind is drawn to the buggers who steal from a company or a charity or a bank. The thing is though as I say it's not about what you've got, its about your attitude to the people around you, and on who you impact. The thing is though, this thread started off talking not about theft but about violence. Differentiating between a game whack to the head with an axe and how that might influence someone to try it for real. I suppose though this too is about how we see ourselves as a unit amongst those around us. This is too deep for me - especially as I'm off to work in about an hour so I shall pause for a bit. :P |

I suppose a game could effect someone who would normally be a nice person when they are drunk because they would believe that they are a lot stronger than thay are (as strong as the person in the game) and try to imitate the game causing serious damage to another person.
But that said any violent media could have this effect on somebody so why do they just blame it on games? It could be that you get more involved in a game and feel like you are that character the same way a 1st person story works but surly games are not the only thing to be blamed here. |

So the likes of wrestling and things dont do this to people?
i know one or 2 people that are so taken in, they know it is fake but still believe and watch it avidly.... It isnt just games is what i am trying to say... games can have an influence, but the persons up bringing. But to me it is nothing to do with a persons social class or financial situation... I mean so kids that are poor know and see what a life of crime can lead to... Other richer kids will do crime purely in a way to get attention that they may have lacked or so that they can try something that they where shielded from... |

I used to be a bit of a b******* to the teachers until about year 7/8 (i loved my year 6 teacher and respected him a lot) then thought people are always treating teachers like aliens when they are just normal people who diserve the respect you would give a friend and since then i have always respected my teachers unless they disrespected me coz that is also unfair. but i have been brought up well so i'm not going to turn into some criminal i know that i like the good feeling you get when you know you've worked hard to save money to buy something and is does feel better when you have it out of your own pocket. But i have a friend who is just like me who will get very pissed off at a show of disrespect if it be to myself or someone else its just wrong.

I used to see a big difference in my old job with people as a quad bike instructor......
Older people used to respect the quads - They knew this things could kill (Well some did) 10-20 year olds (And some adults) thought they where the best rider's we had ever seen... The younger kids had no respect but we could teach them to ride... Now who outta them was the best? The Youngsters.... They saw the size of the machines... It could be some hyper 5 year old or some really quiet kid... the machines where huge to them, and it did kinda of make them scared.. but because they saw the bike's, listen to what we said and behaved like an adult in most cases, they loved riding the quad's..... The teenagers just couldnt get it through their heads that they aint good at this, and that ozzy osbourne is one lucky or in my eyes one unlucky person that he didnt get killed (I dont mean unlucky in a nasty sense but in one that is too in-depth to be talked about). If people of that age where to listen i feel they would have a lot more trust placed in them, as opposed to being labelled hooligans |
