I've been using this for the past month or so, ever since I had trouble downloading at Gamershell (since files wouldn't auto-initiate download sequence). Firefox fixed this and is a pretty nifty looking clone of IE with so many extra goodies that you wondered why you didn't make the change sooner. Also, it's generally a lot quicker than IE. Plus I like the fact you can open a new tab instead of another window (keeps it all tidy) and then there's the pausable download thing that lists all previous downloads, and I bet there's a lot of other stuff too....

There's lots of extensions and themes to be downloaded, although this newest version doesn't have many at this moment.

And then there's Thunderbird - which is an Outlook alternative... although I've not tried that one yet.

Anything that is free and not prone to 'Let's hack Microsoft software' or all the stupid security bugs is as good as used! Although most of us cannot say much about using a Microsoft O/S though lol.

Are we talking Mozilla or Firefox?

I've been using various versions of Firefox for a while now and am Very pleased with it.

I also recently swapped over to Thunderbird (from the same family) for my email package which is an alternative to Outlook Express. With a downloadable English spell checker and trainable spam filter it's looking damn good too.

Great stuff.

Further incentive to switch - as another exploit is found in IE

I am really glad though of the tabbed browser, a fried loves something called netcaptor but it is a lot safer! long may the hackers take IE down and leave this lovely bit of kit alone!

Errrr understatement of the year.

What yer'll find is that as Firefox becomes more popular, more problems will be found with it.

There are problems with previous versions of firefox that errr have been found. In it's defense and favour these problems have been fixed VERY quickly compared to that of IE's.

If no problems are found with Firefox then it would be a miracle in the programming world....

However the problems found, well, i have never read of a problem in IE or FF that has affected a user or the masses of users.

IE 6 has been around for what about 3 years and is showing its problems very badly and as much as MS try to fix them there are more problems found. IMO MS will have to work on an IE7, instead of patching a dated product.

There are articles that sugest MS are doing that.

MSIE popularity may have been bitten by FF but it's nothing that will stop FF from over taking IE as top dog.

With IE being part of the MS OS it's hard to see IE ever being over taken. But IE does what it is supposed to do, view a website as it's basic purpose.

I'm all for IE remaining the top dog.

As long as it takes the biggest chunk of the browser market it will attract the most fire as far as hackers chasing defects to exploit. Better they do it to Mr Multimillion than to Firefox. :P

Firefox has surpassed the 10 million download mark while gaining five percentage points in May to 7.4 per cent in November, according to OneStat.com.

Firefox's percentage gain helped cut into Microsoft's dominance of the web browser market, cutting its market share to less than 90 per cent. OneStat reported in November that IE's market share had slipped to 88.9 per cent in the third week of November, down five percentage points from its share in May. Mozilla-based browsers, including Firefox, rose to 7.4 per cent, up five percentage points from May.

Microsoft has disputed these numbers, claiming that they do not represent corporate users.

Gary Schare, Microsoft's director of product management for Windows, said of OneStat's statistics: "It doesn't jibe with what WebSideStory shows, and what neither of these count is corporate intranets where users aren't actually hitting the web."

On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania State University's Information Technology Services department recommended that students drop IE in favour of Firefox and Apple's Safari to reduce attacks through vulnerabilities in the Microsoft software. The university said "media reports" and a string of warnings by Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Emergency and Response Team led to its recommendation.
