Half-Life 2 to be released in Japanese arcades, thanks to a new agreement between Valve and Taito.

Taito's Type-X hardware will soon be home to an arcade version of Half-Life 2. Scheduled to hit the Japanese arcades in the summer of next year, the game will be played in a large, enclosed cabinet with an as-yet undisclosed control system and 5.1 surround sound for the ultimate immersion factor.

As well as the full one-player game, multi-player co-op and battle modes will also be available. And in an awesome move, Taito's NESYS system allows player data to be stored on a central server, meaning that players can continue their games on any HL2 arcade machine.

The hardware itself is a relatively low-spec 2.5 GHz Celeron processor with 256 MB RAM, a Radeon 9200SE graphics card, and onboard AC97 5.1 surround sound capabilities, giving folks without a recently upgraded PC hope of running the home edition at more than respectable levels.

Quite a strange one this is to see how there will be a arcade version of HL2. A PC FPS game into an arcade game....? Taito have been in this area of business for a very long time & with some very good games, so I am interested to see how this will turn out. If it's in the arcade, the only way I see the control system, is being as a screen-gun-shooter game in the likes of many games made by Sega & Namco i.e. House of the Dead, Time Crisis. I can't think of any way this game would be played besides this. Will just have to see this.

Thought that it would've been run on higer spec hardware to be honest - half the thrill of the arcades used to be the fact that you could play games that looked so much more prettier than the home computer offerings...

Now the thrill of arcades is guessing what the sticky substance on the floor is....
