I'm sure I've read something along these lines somewhere else in the forum (and I think Naoki posted it) but for those that don't know Eurogamer have some 'leaked' details of Quake IV:

QUOTE
The first details of Raven Software's plans for Quake 4 have snuck out this afternoon after subscribers to PC Zone in the UK and the American edition of PC Gamer received the latest issues of the magazine and scanned in screenshots and preview information.

The scanned screenshots have already appeared in various locations - most have been pulled by now, but you can still find them with a little effort - but arguably the details lifted from the preview text are more exciting than visuals that, a very high level of visual quality notwithstanding, might as well be interchangeable with stills of id Software's Doom III. Hardly surprising, of course, given that id's coveted Doom III engine powers the Raven Software-developed Quake 4.

The most interesting revelation so far seems to be that in narrative terms Quake 4 is actually a direct sequel to Quake 2, and takes place just hours after the events of that game, and consists of a mixture of solo missions and battles that have you tackling the Strogg shoulder to shoulder with your fellow marines - most of whom didn't prove terribly useful in Quake 2.

The previews also reveal that you're part of a military campaign attacking the Strogg homeworld, that missions will take place both inside and outside, and that amongst the returning weapons will be the blaster, machinegun, nailgun and shotgun. We're also told that you will get to take control of vehicles from time to time, which would be a first for the series.

Question marks still remain over the multiplayer aspect though. Apparently it's similar to Quake III Arena, and the single-player vehicles will not be available for use against your fellow humans, but other than that details are still scarce. Expect to hear more soon though as further details of Raven's previously mysterious Quake project make it out onto the internet.

Yeah I posted in the Doom 3 thread with rumours of how Quake 4 may be using it's game engine and from reading this it looks like it is true. Though not surprising as it is quite a good engine. Back to the single player aspect it seems. If it is indeed a direct sequel to Quake 2 then that should be interesting as that game was one of the best FPS during it's time & had a good Sci-Fi story. If anybody has ever played and completed this classic, then you would have seen what happens at the end of the game when you defeat the final boss and it kind of left you to want more and see what happens next.

Heh pretty much true with that since all you were able to see when skimming through the levels were dead, bloodied & dislocated bodies of your teammates and atmospheric radio sounds of them in trouble or dying. Only possible way of getting teammates was using the Multiplayer Co-Op mode & that provided for some fun games. So I hope Quake 4 makes use of good A.I comrades to help through the game.

It's nice to see that the same weapons will be back & of course with a nice graphical update. I'm sure they plan on bringing in the ridculousy powerful & trademark weapon of the Quake series, the BFG (no guesses on what that stands for).

If this game does use vehicles then that should be interesting itself. Seems many FPS games these days implement good use of vehicles for combat. Many FPS games these days are using this idea. I could probably see some of the vehicle use in this game as similar to Halo since the story are kinda similar i.e. landing on an alien world.

So as you can see I'm really looking forward to seeing this game in the future since I've enjoyed the previous 3 Quake games. Lets hope that there will be a multiplayer mode & with the vehicles since that would bring more to the game. And I hope that the anticpation for this game will be better than that of Doom 3 as though it was a good game, it was also dissapointing afterwards.

I think Doom 3 was far too repetitive for its own good, and even though it's quite short if you play through it all - it all feels so darn long, as you keep doing the same things, over and over and over again - the engine is lovely though, and I'm sure the monsters are beautiful - it's just a shame they hid them in so much darkness.

It'll be interesting to hear more about Quake IV as it becomes public knowledge.

Voodoo Extreme carry news that the latest issue of PC Gamer has a preview of Quake 4:

QUOTE
... the first real preview of Quake 4, which no - isn't developed by id, but Raven Software, makers of such games as Soldier of Fortune, Elite Force and Jedi Knight 2. The focus of the title is single player, yet it also has an adopted Quake 3 Arena sort of multiplayer experience as well. Powered by the Doom 3 engine, the screen shots look amazing, and more importantly - are well lit, allowing you to actually see the scenery, as opposed to Doom 3's distressing darkness. Some of the other features which really caught my eye is the game is squad based and sports a nice variety of vehicles, which they say looks "fifty times better" than Battlefield 1942, plus (brace yourself) advanced A.I. in the single player game.

Well of course it would be, I hope. After all the game is set miles ahead in the future and in outer-space on an alien world. So I'd expect something along the lines of Halo & the later Unreal Tournament games.

Single player wise, it will go back to the roots of Quake 2 as the story is set a couple hours after the end of the game. Multiplayer is said to be similar to Quake 3 but rumours say the vehicles will not be implement so hope that is not true. Halo/UT2004 style gameplay but in the Quake universe would be very interesting should it happen. Unless they would go for the add-on approach like Unreal 2 & Unreal 2 XMP (Extended Multiplayer) but then that requires alot of work to download it plus patches etc!

I'm glad to see Quake IV using the Doom 3 engine since its great, but the thing that strikes me and especially from the screenshots on that website, it looks far too similar. It makes the next Quake game look like some expansion pack to Doom 3 because of all the similar & 'ultra darky area' style graphics. Something many people complained about!

My feelings exactly.

Hopefully these are just a couple of 'dark' screens, and not a reflection on the poor lighting of the entire game....

Perhaps maybe its just some screenies showing some base infiltration level or what models would look like using the Doom 3 engine (though it looks the same and very generic!). I remember on the old news posts that they mentioned vehciles would be in the game so I guess there would be some open 'outdoor' areas with Halo-but-Quake style combat. Oh well we would have to wait for more released screenshots to see those since its pretty tight-lipped.

There is quite a few games that are all the same now which is why it will be such a shame if EA take over UBIsoft

I quite like that screenshot of the spaceships shooting each other. And the extra screenshots showing what its like to have AI teammates kinda reminds me of Halo. Although yet, the models of the characters look too 'Doom 3 Generic' and it still has too much of that dark look on it. I understand that because it uses the same game engine then off course models & graphical looks would be similar, but many people who have never played Doom 3 and look at this may get very confused!

QUOTE
"With Doom 3 it was horror. With Quake IV, it's war."

Pretty much says it all. But its still too dark!!!
