...Drastic action. Last night at about 3.30am I had to take drastic action to curb my MOH Breakthrough addiction. When you look at what it is in the cold light of day, it's little more than doing the same thing over and over and over because it puts you in a certain comfort zone. the only way out I saw for myself was the extreme one: I took the Breakthough disc out of the hard drive and I did indeed 'breakthough'...I broke it into pieces.

is online gaming addictive? It can be....anyway, back to the DTs now!

Ah - this time it's a bit more extreme than your previous attempts to go cold turkey, unless you're a dab hand with sticky tape that is....

There's plenty of other games to play online, but perhaps I shouldn't mention them - for fear of starting off your cravings once again, 3.30 in the a.m. is a bit extreme - all things in moderation and all that...

3.30am is standard, GoiP! Me and the missus go to bed late most nights...catches up with me when I have agency work the next morning, though.

And, like all preturnaturally crafty junkies making a big display of renunciation, I know inside as I swear to myself: "Never again!" that Pacific Assault and with it new maps is just around the corner.

Not just online addiction Lermontov - The number of times I've removed Diablo2 from the drive only to reinstall it, the expansion pack the 3 or 4 patches and then a mod is incredible!

I've been doing a lot of CoD online recently and getting to bed too late. And as I'm about to start a long series of shifts I'm going to have to be good.....if I can, and go to bed at reasonable hours.

Somehow I have my doubts that I've got the will power required. :(

QUOTE (Lermontov @ Sep 24 2004, 0:22)
is online gaming addictive?

From looking at myself a couple of months ago or even the past year, a BIG absolute & definate YES!! Why...? Well I used to have been completely addicted to BF1942 & its range of decent mods, mainly Desert Combat. I used to have spent hours & hours of heavy gaming with this title. An example of this would be the amount of times where I've stayed glued to my computer playing from say, 8pm till like 3pm the next day, hardly eating as well. Also doing this a couple times a week which is obviously not healthy lol. It would explain before, why whenever us lot here have some BF1942 sessions, 95% of the time I'm always around playing properly or causing some mischief. There were many times where I wanted to go 'cold turkey' with this game but could never have brought myself to have done so since it was like a drug.

But then couple of months ago something happened that had actually stopped me from the crazy online gaming addiction with that particular game & perhaps many others. During a time when I felt like reformatting my computer, one of the BF1942 CD's had to break (somehow naturally in my CD drive) so that mean't reinstalling it not possible. I had a ranting thread in this forum about this sometime ago lol. Boy was I really mad at the time. I felt like maybe it was time to leave that game and shift my gaming addiction onto others and kill my body even more. But thats when things started to get kinda better. Since then, I have found myself to hardly play games online anymore. I only seem to spend like 10 minutes playing and then I get very bored of it. Perhaps now, the only time is when us lot have some gaming meetings & sessions, thats if some of them ever happen :D. I've found myself spending some time playing offline games as well, moslty old games I own which I've never even bothered to try. And I don't play these till like the afternoon of the next day. Also I'm spending a little more time away from gaming as well which is a good thing.

Anyways seeing as he is not here, I would probably have to point my finger at Pilchy for introducing me to BF1942. Perhaps many of my unhealthy gaming sessions would never have happened should I have not owned the game. Then again I may have got the game anyways since many here have prasied how good the game is.

So I guess were are kinda similar Lermontov. Hope I'm not stealing your thunder with my big post lol. I much bow down to you for actually breaking the game disc to stop your addiction whereas I could not bring myself to do it if I had to. I think the disc would have to break itself to stop me :P.

Any chance of you breaking any other discs should another addiction happening :D ?

LOL. I think I might reach that stage again, Naoki, when I get hold of Pacific Assault. I've just downloaded the demo for the CoD expansion pack and anything with snow gets my vote. I never did play the first two demos after downloading them so maybe I'll get hooked on that too!

In a way I see online gaming and games you play offline rather like watching TV indiscriminately as against actually going out of your way and chosing a film or something else to watch. There's something much more edifying in going your own way and chosing a well-loved offline game to revisit. MOH online is certainly throwaway when compared to playing a game like Thief 3, or even the actual hard drive game of MOH. I know there are some really involved online multiplayer games but FPS's are usually not one of them, even when you have campaign objectives.

There's a lot to be said for staying off the beaten track most of the time and going your own way. It was the instant gratification of MOH online with scores that could be settled in litereally seconds that is (WAS!!!!) so darned addictive! Breaking the disc actually took a lot of effort, which is of course ridiculous!

Anyway, back to banging my head against the walls of the padded cell....

Cold turkey? Shudder...

I've missed online gaming massively since moving flat. Like Naoki, I've been playing BF942 (BFV mod) over and over again. Just can't seem to let go of that game. I love it. I really do...

And it's been horrible looking at the ingame multiplayer browser and realising that you can't update it. I hope to be back playing online as soon as possible. Much better than playing the likes of Doom 3. Yawn.

Took some guts to break that disc though. Moment of madness maybe? Should have popped the disk in the post... let some other poor bugger get addicted.

there has been many a time where I have started playing mohaa and later looked up to find that it is around 5.30am and I have actually sat up all night!

I am addicted I would say, and so would my other half too, for she is constantly dragging me away.

Must say though I have never thought about breaking my disks, that would give me the shakes from withdrawal! eeek!
