Following intense and widespread rumours, Sony have revealed details and pictures of the newly re-designed Playstation 2.

The new machine is due to arrive on these shores on Monday the 1st of November. The sexier new model has been nipped and tucked in a variety of ways, meaning that it is now half the weight and 5cm thinner, and most notably now comes with a port for network play built-in. It seems the new device will be top loading, PSone-style, no doubt a money saving exercise, and is reportedly similar in size to a hardback book, making lugging it around a far less strenuous experience. On the downside, there are STILL only two controller ports, and a new multi-tap will be needed for four way gaming.

The new look PS2 will be launched at around the £99 mark, and with much awaited games like GTA: San Andreas on their way, Sony are quids in for the upcoming Christmas period, especially with many current PS2 owners complaining that their older models are on their last legs and in need of a replacement. With 72 million units sold worldwide already, this next step for the PS2 will further enhance its position as market leader by some distance, and bring Sony one step closer to what seems to be total world domination. It seems anyone without a PS2 following the Christmas period will be feeling very left out indeed.

First the PSX and now a redesigned PS2. They might as well have called it the "PSTwo" seeing as they did the same things for the PS1/One and it did pretty well. It was also during the time that the PS2 was near to being released as well so I guess Sony are using the same tactics to keep their costs down. Least it now gives me a reason to actually own this console finally, since I've been planning on geting one for a long time, or should I just wait for the release of the PS3 since its not far off now. But for £99, its not bad.

£99 sounds like a fair price - there's a fair few titles worth owning on the PS2...

Isn't there?

There are alot of quality titles worth owning on the PS2 since it practically covers every single genre of game. Though I would obviously say that there are loads of pants games as well.

I'm tempted - it would allow me to act like a drunken fool and entertain myself with dance mats and eyetoy like things that my PC sorely lacks...

But then... the GameCube has the rather spiffy Resident Evil title coming out, and the X-Box.. has... thingy...

Bulk?

That's an X-Box only title, isn't it?

From what I've heard it's not as good as was originally hyped...

Damn you Molyneux!

Portable PlayStation ready to go

Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) will go on sale in Japan on 12 December.

The long-awaited handheld game playing gadget will cost about 19,800 yen (145 euros) when it hits the shelves.

At launch 21 games will be available for the PSP, including Need for Speed, Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Acid and Vampire Chronicle.

Sony has not yet announced when the PSP will be available in Europe and the US, but analysts expect it to debut in those territories in early 2005.
