Need to order a new ISP for broadband. Would like low latency and good ping over all else, though I'm looking at getting a 1mb down service. Trouble is I would like a good up service too, though I understand that it's all very technical so upload speed is not necessarily indicative of good ping.

Well, hope to see you all soon, guys and gals.

Happy gaming.

I can't fault Pipex, with whom I have been a customer for 1 year now on the 512k service. It is very reliable and great for gaming and I get a ping of between 21 and 35 on average.

I am thinking of upgrading to the 1mb service, but of course the upload speed is still the same at 256k.

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

The link above compares and rates all the Major supplies..its the best way to check them out and look at their costs..

Personally i would recommend Zen. I have used them from the off, never had a problem, and any issues i have had their support is second to none. The pings or speed is the tops, check it out on ADSL guide above.

If your looking for the best, then it has to be Zen.

They were recently listed as the second fastest ISP.

Oh, and they were also listed as the most expensive.

Well, you get what you pay for.

1mb service wont improve your on-line gaming experience, but then you probable know that already.

Ok then, my only experience of bb ISPs so far has been Plusnet. I went with them for their good reputation and based on several recommendations and aside from a little teething problem to begin with over hardware delivery (the time spent not online they compensated for in the first payment) I've been very happy with them.

I don't know how they fare against others for speed, all I can say is I've had no noticeable problems. Their support is good too.

I avoided BT cause they seem to have shipped their support to an oversea branch and the last time there was a local glitch in the dial up system the advice I got was basically a detailed guide on how to drop every conceivable security measure and when it failed to work the tech seemed to get quite frustrated with me. (It was a local area fault in the end). This put me right off using BT.

I've just switched from Wanadoo to PlusNet and am very happy with PlusNet. Cheaper, faster and much, much better support.

So I see, but as with most things in life we tend to recommend the services or products of companies with whom we have had good personal experiences...I was recommended to go for Pipex by some friends and as a result of favourable comments on the PCA forum. I'm delighted with the service and (importantly for us gamers) the low ping and reliablity of the connection....so you'll have to excuse me if I recommend them to others :P

There are plenty of good ISPs out there and Zen seem to regularly get good reviews and I guess it's a case of going for a deal that suits you, perhaps based upon a few good recommendations .

Thanks very much for your time and effort in responding, and sorry I've not been back sooner. I did check out your advice earlier but had no time to post. It's a tricky business deciding who to go with. Ordep's advice about a 1mb service not necessarily speeding up gaming has me questioning whether I really need the extra speed for other things.

Been looking at Adslguide (thanks). Been with Zen in the past - maybe I'll check 'em out. They're top of the charts for speed this month, but still pricey I bet. Tesco look okay for a 512 service.

I'll be back...

Well, in case anyone's interested:

Home Choice is who I'm going with.

They do telly through the connection and 1mbit down/288k up. For tv and internet, they worked out cheaper than say Blueyonder, which I'd also looked at.

I scoured adslguide for bad vibes, but this company seem okay - been around since late 90s too. I think they're only available in london, which is handy for me. :D

By the way, tv doesn't affect internet download speed they say. Hope it doesn't all go pear-shaped. I'll keep you informed...

PS. Hope to be back on by 8th-10th October.
