For those of you that weren't already aware - Sid Meier’s Pirates! is being re-worked and re-released on the PC.

Originally released in 1987, Pirates! was well received in the press - take a gander at what the people who frequent Moby Games thought of it - I've no first hand experience of the original, far too young you see, but have read quite a bit of favourable press about the original.

The official home page offers plenty more information, whilst Gamers Hell have a pair of movies to download - one here and the other here.

It looks like it could be just the thing for aspiring Jack Sparrow types..

I LOVED the original pirates......had a C128 at the time...gosh...Micropose games....Gunship, Airborne Ranger...jumpers for goalposts...marvellous...isn't it?
Pirates was an amazing game...mixture of strategy and action....attacking ships/convoys and towns, sword fights with captains and commanders of garrisons...looting and pillaging and luuurve action with the ladies of tha spanish main.....

highly recommend you find an emulator and original version - I'll be looking into this with happy memories....

C128? When I had to make do with the 64k versions of most things? Psh.... some people are just spoilt...

Anyway, you can sign up for the beta now, the product code is AVAST - no harm in trying.

The idea of emulation tends to be a bad one, as they have an awful way of ruining my childhood memories...

Gamespy have posted up a preview of this work in progress (currently scheduled for release on the 16th November)

QUOTE
The best part about this, though, is that everything is completely randomized each time you restart the game. Most gamers will probably complete their first pirate career in a few days and then come back, again trying to best their last score or their last career -- or maybe just see how quickly they can take down a British 50 gun man-o'-war with a one gun sloop. Just like the original, the updated version of Sid Meier's Pirates! feels like it has that insanely addictive quality that secured the original a coveted permanent place on my hard drive for many yarrrs! -- I mean, years.

1UP and Game Daily have posted up a preview each

QUOTE (Game Daily)
This being an early build, it did have more than its fair share of bugs. Sometimes the ships would vanish, making it look like an invisible craft pushing through the water. Additionally, there's nothing quite as disappointing as tracking a pirate down halfway across the map, defeating him, and then having the game crash every time. However, despite the difficulties, we were absolutely hooked on this adventure game...
