"If Hiroshi Yamauchi phones me, I will pick up at once," says Seattle's richest man.

Bill Gates has claimed that he'd still be interested in purchasing Nintendo, despite being turned away only a few short years ago. Speaking in German financial magazine WirtschaftsWoche, Gates stated that he'd definitely consider an acquisition of the world's biggest games company, if ex-director and main shareholder Hiroshi Yamauchi would just get on the blower.

It's not likely to happen anytime soon however, and going by Nintendo's rebuttal before Microsoft eventually entered the market with the Xbox, you'd imagine it's a concept that belongs in the realms of fantasy rather than on the pages of the FT. Gates and his motley bunch also tried unsuccessfully to buy Sega at the same time, and barely a week goes by without them being linked to the purchase of other third-party companies.

It's thought by many industry players that the only way Nintendo and Microsoft could ever hope to rival the success of the Sony PlayStation is by joining forces and combining their efforts, Power Rangers-style. However, given that both companies are readying themselves to enter the next-generation console war with brand new machines, it seems they'll both be playing a game of catch-up for a little while longer.

Well HELL NO to that if it does happen! I would rather see former long time rivals of SEGA & Nintendo join forces instead. That would be the dream combination. Nintendo are known for being innovative in making console technology & some good games franchises and SEGA are known to make some of the best games ever themselves also.
