Some very sad news for all you DC players from the Desert Combat Forums

QUOTE
1. Is this announcement concerning the next release of Desert Combat?

Yes and no. This release has the help of the DC devs and includes material donated by testers. It is the size and compilation of the next DC release. It is however not "Desert Combat".

2. Is this the last release of Desert Combat?

Yes and no. Officially: .7 was the last release. "DC Final" is an unofficial release created by some very dedicated DC developers (off the clock) and testers. Unfortunately Trauma studios is unable to continue Desert Combat as their schedules simply cannot handle it. Speculation about contracts is pure speculation and I cannot answer any questions about it.

3. Will work continue on this unofficial continuation mod for Desert Combat?

That is to be foreseen. It depends on how well this release is recieved. Although this is not official by Trauma studios, this is what the testers call the "next Desert Combat release". There's not a tester that doesn't disagree. This release is worthy of being called .8 - despite that it can't be

4. What will be in this unofficial release?

Well obviously some bug fixes. We are working with a skeleton crew and we can't get to every little thing on every map. But I think we got most of the big stuff.

Also some balancing things. The hummer is obviously fixed. I can't post the changelist. The bulk of the changes are cosmetic. The explosion effects have been revamped. There's a couple of new animations. The sounds are WAY cooler. The smoke trails for certain things have been revamped. Some new vehicle varients. A couple of innovative weapons for sure. New maps of course. We're still not sure what maps will make it - so I'm not going to list it.

It will be an AWESOME release. There are SOOO many refinements that it makes the game feel like modern combat. The old releases (to me) felt like a BF42 mod. Now its a whole new game.

5. When's it going to be released?

Can't say. We are ramping up testing and are going to push it through quick - but we want to make sure we get all the bugs out

Well I just don't know what to say about this. DC is one of the best mods to ever be made on BF1942 and since now that Trauma Studios have dropped it, it will never be the same again. So much for the anticipated 0.8 release since techincally that is no more. Guess we may have to see how well this *DC Final* will be like. Hopefully the dedicated left over developers can carry on and make this mod even better. And hopefully it doesn't turn into something like DC Extended where they just feel like putting in whatever they like cause many whiners ask for them, which in then causes the game to be very unbalanced. From now on DC will never be the same again.

Some little information about whats new on the DC Final mod including some screenshots over at FPSCentral, thats if any old DC player is still interested in this mod.

That Bridge map looks quite interesting, its like an extension of Basras Edge or something seeing as the same building modules are used. Also I wonder what they are going to change in Lost Village seeing as that is probably my favourite Conquest map in DC. Perhaps make a river gap so Opposition don't basecamp the Coaltion. I know for one that they are going to make the Opposition's VSS weapon put into crate kits seeing as many Coalition players whine about how *powerful* it is. Perhaps do the same for the Stingers for the Anti-tank class as well.

I'm interested!

It's a shame that there will be no more updates of DC after this one, not that it's in need of much tweaking - but the (normally huge) updates always gave me something to look forward too... and the fancy new vehicles I got to crash, and the shiny new weapons that got to kill me...

Did read your posts Naoki, just didn't respond - naughty of me I guess. I'm still interested in DC but I suppose I'm looking forward to the BF2 official release more, hence a sort of apathy with DC.

Still, interesting stuff though - I hope they get something released sometime soon, as, like the Pig, I too miss having something big to download...

Except it's not released yet, is it?

The last news post on Desertcombat.com is reporting that Trauma Studios had been bought by Digital Illusions:
QUOTE
DIGITAL ILLUSIONS BUYS TRAUMA STUDIOS

Digital Illusions buys New York based game developer Trauma Studios Inc.
Initially Trauma will work with the development of a concept for a new PC game.

- Through Desert Combat Trauma showed they are remarkably good at developing products the consumer wants. They understand our technology and are experienced and skillful game developers. This was the major factor to our acquisition, said Patrick Söderlund, CEO at Digital Illusions.

- With Digital Illusions award winning team and Trauma Studios’ talent, I am confident we will be very successful together. We really look forward to being part of the Digital Illusions family, said Frank DeLise, CEO at Trauma Studios Inc.

Digital Illusions buys all assets of Trauma and employ all its employees. Digital Illusions thereby buys the trademarks Desert Combat and Trauma Studios.

Trauma will work with the development of games built on Digital Illusions’ technology produced in Sweden. The focus for Trauma – as for Digital Illusions’ Canadian office - will thereby be on concept and game developing, rather than on developing technology. Initially Trauma will work with the development of a concept for a new PC game based on the Battlefield 2 engine. The companies have been working together since February 2004, and Trauma will continue to develop certain parts of Battlefield 2.

Trauma has nine employees today. According to plan the number of employees will increase gradually to be around 20 persons.

Trauma Studios is specialized in FPS* games. They are best known for their Desert Combat mod of Digital Illusions' hit game, Battlefield1942, which was elected “Best Mod of the Year” in 2002 and 2003 by the gaming site Gamespy.com. Trauma also has developed gaming tools for Electronic Arts and the American Military.

For any of you BF1942/DC players here who are yet 'still' interested (I know PilchY probably is), it has been confirmed that DC Final will be released on the 16th of this month! Yes thats right! Confirmation has been made over at the Desert Combat Forums. It has also been noted that DC Final will not replace the good old 0.7 version as they will run side by side. So if you do not enjoy the newly released unofficial version of DC, then you can always go back to the last ever official release. A good move as if I one day get back into playing this, I feel that I will prefer 0.7 due to the many hours & fun I've spent wih it. Good memories!

Anyone downloaded it yet?

File Rush and Worthplaying have mirrors up.

There's a rather huge list of fixes/alterations at the Worthplaying link, which I won't post here as it does go on a bit...

We Europeans never really had the chance to 'actually' download DC Final on the actual release yesterday due to the obvious time zone differences. It was very funny cause I was browsing the official DC Forums and so many people were complaining when it was going to be released, even people who are in different parts of the US themselves. But least its finally out now although I am not going to be downloading this just yet.

Just note that the File Rush link Pig provided requires you to have DC 0.7 to be installed as this is a client-update patch version. The Full Client weighs in at 361 MB so it's not much of a big download.

Some more mirrors taken from an official post in the DC Forums
