Another World War 2 first person shooter - although the apparent "breakthrough squad-based combat mechanism and unprecedented realism" makes it sound like Hidden and Dangerous to me - no mention has been made on what game engine it will be using...

QUOTE
San Francisco, CA - April 13, 2004 - Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, today reinforces its strategy to dominate the war games market by announcing a long-term deal with award-winning developer Gearbox Software to publish a new military franchise: Brothers in Arms. With its breakthrough squad-based combat mechanism and unprecedented realism, the first game in the series is poised to revolutionize the WWII genre when it ships on consoles and PC starting Holiday 2004.

The WWII theme is one of the fastest growing segments of the military shooter market and we believe that Brothers in Arms is the ideal title to expand Ubisoft's new catalog of war games, said Yves Guillemot, CEO and President of Ubisoft. "We were blown away by the immersive and realistic combat we experienced when playing this game and anybody who knows the reputation of Gearbox Software will understand the magnitude of this deal."

Created by Texas-based Gearbox Software, Brothers in Arms is the most realistic and authentic WWII shooter ever. While other WWII games have sugarcoated the war experience, Brothers in Arms is based on a true story and will immerse gamers into the gritty, uncensored and emotionally-charged side of war. The game puts you in the shoes of Sgt. Matt Baker, a D-Day paratrooper squad leader, and asks you to lead the squad as you balance their lives with the success of the mission. The true stories and historical events you experience on your perilous journey take you through real battlefields meticulously recreated from aerial reconnaissance images, US Army Signal Corps photos and eye-witness accounts of war-torn Normandy. Players of all skill levels can battle their way through this intense experience because of Brothers in Arms innovative and accessible command and control system.

from the official site

This is the game that was previously being referred to as War Story in earlier rumors this week.

There's also a preview featured on UGO which shows a few screenshots off - and expands further on the press release.

I thought it was to do with the Dire Straits song?

I've no idea of the BBC series of which you are referring too... I don't watch much TV though... and there's no mention of any links to it in the press release...

My mistake - I was thinkinf of Band of Brothers...though there's also a scifi book called Brothers in Arms by Lois McMaster Bujold (and it's probably tons better than this game will be........

......sorry....

....something of a fan of Bujold's books).

Is it really fair to compare a book to a game? While a book will allow your imagination to run free and voice the characters, visualise their actions and so forth, a game will always seem distinctly limited when compared to a good book...

(So, yes, I prefer a good book over a good game - shock horror)

Homelanfed ask Gearbox co-founder Randy Pitchford about the inspirations and research that are going into this game

The screenshots of the game from the official site dont look to bad actually. Looks like a nice heavy use of foliage in some of them as well. Character models seem to look quite life like a little bit.

I would agree with you Pig that a book will always be better than a game cause yes it makes your imagination go free and wild. Whereas in a game, it is pretty much linear, so I guess that is why it would be limited.

More info over at Yahoo Games. I agree with Naoki, that the screenshots look pretty good - nice foliage and character shots.

C&VG take a first look at the multiplayer aspects of Brothers In Arms...

QUOTE
In the multiplayer scenario we're playing, four players take on the roles of sergeant of their own mini-squad of AI-controlled soldiers, two on the side of the Allies, two on the side of the Germans. While the formers' objective is to deliver secret documents from A to B, the latter has to quickly organise an ambush to wipe out the foe before their task is complete.

Gearbox has informed us previously that in each multiplayer map, the two sides have unique objectives but which cross over.

Icons on a compass in the corner of the screen indicates the position of the enemy and the direction of their destination area, which need to be monitored at every possible juncture.

The interesting twist on the multiplayer game is that rather than playing either as part of or as leader of your mates' squad, each player commands their own mini-team of soldiers. This ensures that the whole leadership aspect from the single-player game remains intact, and allows you to execute more cunning and complex strategies of surrounding and suppressing, which can then be combined with similarly like-minded manoeuvres with your teammate.

For example, you might want to play the part of the 'fire' team and position your troops in well-covered farmland territory. As soon as the enemy approaches, they'll instinctively attempt to hold them back (the AI is very sophisticated and each soldier behaves with remarkable intelligence).

Whilst this is going on, your friend's squad might decide to lead an assault charge around the outer flanks. Should his gun-totin' fighters reach their position undetected, or at least with minimum damage, they'll be able to add further pressure to, in our case the Allies, by attacking from both angles.

And now for the other fun bit - as sergeant, you're also independent of your squad. Therefore, while you might instruct your troops to advance, hold, suppress or charge, you can execute an opposite strategy, thus combining flanking manoeuvres with covering fire, or by reinforcing a head-on attack directly down the middle.

Alternatively, you might decide to sit back and smell the fresh Normandy grass, although that probably won't win you many wars - especially during the multiplayer maps when your opponents will be attempting to counter-act you with all manner of sly tactics.

C&VG(again) have a hands on preview available for your perusal

QUOTE
Receiving your orders from a nearby superior, you, as real-life D-Day hero Sergeant Baker, must advance with your platoon up a pebbled road, sweep away any impending German threats, and eventually capture a machine-gun post situated in the field ahead.

Sounds easy on paper doesn't it? Trust us, it isn't. March just a few feet to the deserted farmhouse on your right, and you'll spy a couple of German soldiers perched behind indestructible cover.

The obvious path round this is to order your Fire team to seek similar cover behind a nearby wall and suppress the Germans with continuous fire (this is accomplished by simply clicking on your Command button and moving the cursor to where you want them to move to - very easy to master and not entirely different to the set-up used in Freedom Fighters).

While this is being executed, you and your Assault team can then sneak stealthily round the back of the house, and surprise the suppressed Germans with a crafty attack from the rear. Cheeky, eh?

Then, of course, problem number two comes into play - the discovery of two further Germans positioned along the route behind the house. As soon as they spot you, it's shrapnel up the botty time as they certainly won't take too kindly to your presence. Fortunately, you have several options available to you here.

One is to lead a full-on charge through the middle of the German aggressors, firing repeatedly and hoping for the best. While this method is certainly quick and far more action-oriented, it does leave your troops susceptible to incoming fire.

The method we preferred (and generally found slightly more successful) involved employing your Assault team in a similar role to that of the Fire team, using their covering shots as a diversion for you to crawl stealthily towards the Germans along the far flank.

Reach your destination without arousing suspicion (a chipped wall provides ample cover) and you can either burst out, guns blazing, or alternatively, chuck a grenade into their midst. Achieve this, and despatching the other Germans being suppressed by your specialist Fire team should be child's play.

Apparently there's already a sequel planned for this title..

QUOTE
Preliminary work on Brothers in Arms 2 is already underway, we can reveal, Gearbox informing us at a press event in London this morning that part of its current European tour will involve research in Belgium for a second game in the series.

"We're working on the sequel," Colonel John Antal, the military adviser brought onboard by Gearbox for Brothers in Arms, told us earlier, before adding that the current plan is to recreate the entire World War II campaign as experienced by the 3rd platoon Fox Company, 502d PIR, the unit that's the subject of the squad-based FPS.

"We're going to follow Sgt. Matt Baker through World War II, I think people are going to want to hear his story," Colonel Antal said.

Mention was made of Operation Market Garden in relation to Brothers in Arms 2 by the Colonel, the operation the logical progression for the series. However, he also spoke of the Battle of the Bulge, Gearbox perhaps considering including both events in the follow-up.

Demo soon.

A recent IRC chat has been transcribed and posted up on PC Gamer, the final lines of which are:

QUOTE
PCG: Any last comments from the BiA dev team?

Okay - We're getting a lot of questions about a demo. There WILL be a demo. I don't have a date yet. It's soon. Also - We're getting questions about system specifications on PC. 1ghz, 256mb, 32mb DX8 video card. That's min-spec. The game will scale up. There's PS2.0 stuff and a few PS3.0 features, too (PC only).

You can see the whole chat log - here
